Jute is the fibre most breeders reach for. Strong enough to bind a nest together, soft enough to line it, and birds take to it readily once the breeding season starts. Use it on its own, or as the building layer over a felt or cotton pad sitting in a nest pan.

It suits canaries and serins, British finches and mules such as goldfinch, greenfinch, linnet and siskin, zebra and Bengalese finches, and many softbills and waxbills. It is building material rather than a finished nest, so pair it with a nest pan and a pad for the base.

Offer it in short lengths and pull out any long strands. Loose fibre that is too long can wrap around toes and legs.
